We spend our early lives trying to please our parents, even those who may not care or deserve to be pleased.

Many say that the rest of our lives, whether we know it or not, is spent like Melville’s mighty Captain Ahab pursuing that mighty whale through friends, lovers, habits, careers we do not enjoy, and other attempts to finally satisfy that need to please.
